Why bother with a consultant when I have AI?
As AI becomes increasingly powerful, the value of using an AMS selection consultant (and many other types of consultants!) starts to come into question. After all, with very well-constructed prompts and responses, an association could develop a very solid needs analysis and RFP that could be used to solicit proposals for a new AMS. If I can do that on my own, why would I use a consultant? What value does an AMS selection consultant actually bring that AI cannot?
Here are three things that immediately come to mind:
- Industry knowledge - This is not just knowing the players involved, but what the actual reputation and track record of those players is. AI can tell you which vendors do what, and maybe even tell you what pricing looks like. But they can't tell you if the vendor's last implementation was a success or a failure, what ownership changes might be occurring, or what any particular vendor's strengths and weaknesses are.
- Herding the cats and managing the project - AI can't know the people, personalities, and politics of your organization. And it can't keep you moving the project forward for you. A good consultant knows how to build consensus and keep a project on track.
- Ensuring focus on the real issues and challenges - A good consultant serves as a sort of "referee" to ensure that all parties are heard, but also that the most important issues are identified and get the attention they need.
There are many other areas where an expert human can't be replaced by AI (for now!). But before you decide AI can replace a consultant in any realm, consider what the consultant can bring to the table that AI will not be able to. It might be the difference between success and failure!
