“People more frequently require to be reminded than informed.”
“People more frequently require to be reminded than informed.” - Samuel Johnson
I came across this quote recently and immediately thought "Exactly!"
A lot of my consulting is actually reminding my clients to do things they already know to do, but have allowed themselves to get out of the habit of doing them. So here are a few reminders for you:
- Database management is about success, not perfection. No database and no large set of data will ever be perfect. Stop expecting it.
- Database management is a process, not an event. You will always be working on improving the quality and value of your data. And if you stop working on it, it will not stay where it is, it will get worse.
- Your system is not "the worst system ever." (Only one can be worst!) But there is always room for improvement.
- Whether your processes are documented or not, you actually have processes. They may be inconsistent or wrong, but they exist. Documenting your processes ensures you've actually thought about how you do things and improves your chances of consistency throughout the organization.
Of course, this list can go on and on. But the point is, most of us knowwhat we need to do, but often just need to be reminded of it. Consider this your reminder.
