Olympic gold medalist Wilma Rudolph said: “Winning is great, sure, but if you are really going to do something in life, the secret is learning how to lose. Nobody goes undefeated all the time. If you can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go on to win again, you are going to be a champion someday.”
What does this have to do with data management? I put "lose" in scare quotes because what I'm really referring to is learning how to deal with the inevitable setbacks that occur when managing data. Data gets entered incorrectly. Staff makes mistakes. Customersmake mistakes! Data is never perfect.
It is how we RESPOND to all of this that matters. Like Rudolph says, "If you can pick up after a crushing defeat" (or just some bad data!), you'll be a champion someday.
So acknowledge that mistakes will be made, errors will be discovered, and data will never be perfect. Learn how to "lose" and keep going!
