Amazon Continues to Raise the Bar

I’m a huge fan of Amazon.com. I’ve been buying from them for years and have been an Amazon Prime member pretty much since they started the program. But Amazon can still find ways of amazing me.

Last week on a Monday, my wife placed an order on Amazon at 7.55pm. According to Amazon’s site, if you place your order by 8pm and you’re an Amazon Prime member, the order will be delivered in two days for free. So we fully expected to see the package delivered sometime Wednesday afternoon.

At 11.45am on Tuesday, the package arrived on our doorstep. That’s less than 16 hours since the order was placed. 16 hours! How much faster can they possibly deliver? Is same-day delivery next?!?

I’ve written articles about how Amazon does business and how associations can (and can’t) be more like Amazon (Articles are here, here, and here). I think the key takeaway is to keep looking for ways to amaze your members and customers. It may not be 16 hour delivery but maybe it’s special treatment for longtime members, new member, or your best volunteers. Even if you’re delighting your members now, you can always do something else to surprise them. Amazon just keeps doing it.
