I first heard this from Thomas Sowell many years ago. And I’ve written about it here and here and here.

But it’s so important that it bears repeating, time and time again. When it comes to data management, and especially data management software, there are no perfect solutions, only trade-offs.

The software might be really good, but it’s also very expensive.

Or the software is really easy to use, but it doesn’t do everything we want it to do.

Or the software does what we need it to do, but the way it does it is really convoluted.

These are all trade-offs. The perfect solution doesn’t exist, but acknowledging that you are making trade- offs will help you make decisions and keep a project or plan moving. Seeking perfection will lead to inaction and ultimate failure.

There are no solutions, only trade-offs.
